Now that the pandemic forced us to isolate ourselves inside our homes, one thing that keeps us connected and updated is our phones.
Indeed, mobile phones play a vital role in our society and in our battle against the pandemic.
There is a lot of phones available in the market due to the rising demand, ranging from entry-level up to the top of the line.
One of the biggest tech brands that offers a wide range of smartphones in the Philippines is HUAWEI.
The mobile tech titan is known for its continuous innovation in technology, offering different smart devices and services fit for different users and different needs.
Recently, Huawei released one of its latest offerings – the HUAWEI Y7, and here are a few things to expect from this entry-level smartphone contender in the market.
DESIGN
The Huawei Y7 comes in two colors: Aurora Purple – a chic purple gradient and a classic Midnight Black. The colors and the design undoubtedly gave the device a premium touch.
The body of the phone has a polished synthetic ceramic texture that has a glossy finish, while the frame has a matte finish that allows you to have a comfortable grip on the device. It is quite light and easy to carry around thanks to its plastic composition.
The power button, together with the volume rocker, is placed on the right side of the device. The buttons are quite tactile and easy to use. You do not need to exert a lot of pressure to make it work.
Tucked on the left side are the dual SIM tray and microSD slot. The device has a dual 4G LTE that enables 4G connectivity on both SIM cards.

DISPLAY
The Huawei Y7 takes pride in its 6.26 inches TFT LCD with a 19:9 aspect ratio. The 1,520 x 720 HD+ IPS screen delivers a greater amount of saturation and clarity from any viewing angle.
The device has slim side bezels, making the screen size bigger. It also has a thick chin bezel marked with HUAWEI – which is unobtrusive, by the way.
In line with the viewing experience, the device included an eye comfort mode – that filters out blue light to relieve visual fatigue, giving your screen a warmer tint.
It is a nice feature that will keep your eyes protected while binge-watching your favorite Kdrama or Netflix series.
CAMERA
Located on the upper right corner of the rear is the device’s dual-camera setup – consists of a 13 MP rear main camera and a 2MP Bokeh lens.
The Bokeh effect feature easily simulates a shallow depth of field, but the blur quality can still be improved.
Placed on top of the dew drop notch is its 8MP front camera that comes with a beauty effect, which smoothens the skin, but may also look flat and too enhanced when you go overboard.
All in all, both the front and rear cameras take decent photos during daylight and in well-lit places. But when it comes to low-light and dimmed setting, the photos may appear pale and grainy.
When it comes to its video quality, the front and rear cameras both have a maximum resolution of full HD 1080P. It also allows you to shoot using Beauty mode, but the maximum resolution for that is HD 720P.
Aside from these, another camera feature that this device has is its scan option, where you can easily scan QR codes.
For an entry-level smartphone, the cameras work up to par.

SPEAKER/AUDIO
The speaker (located at the bottom of the device) has a relatively good quality and loud.
It can fill up the room with music.
I also tried watching a couple of YouTube videos and listening to music using the headset that comes with the device. The audio quality of the headset is not the best, but passable.
The device also has two microphones: the primary microphone (placed at the bottom of the device) and the secondary microphone (placed on top of the device).
After trying it with a few calls from here and there, I observed that the device has a decent call quality – both on speaker and headset.
SECURITY
Embedded at the back of the phone is its circular fingerprint sensor that helps you unlock your phone with just one touch.
The fingerprint sensor is one of the best features of the Huawei Y7. It is fast and convenient – especially for those who are always on the go. Instead of typing your password or drawing your pattern, you have the option to access your phone immediately with just one tap.

Another security option that the phone has is the Face unlock feature. This security feature is also commendable because it can quickly recognize your face. I tried it a few times, and there were a few lags, but it is not that big of a deal, it still gets the job done.
BATTERY
A good phone battery life is essential, especially now that we are all reliant on our phones for our daily dose of information, news, and entertainment.
Huawei Y7 has a 4000 mAH battery that can support your phone activities such as gaming, social media surfing, and watching series.
After navigating through the internet, playing music and games, and video streaming, its full battery life lasted for more than two days – that is really impressive.
The device also has an AI Power Saving technology that lets you conserve your battery life when you are out – quite handy, especially for workers.
PERFORMANCE AND STORAGE
The Huawei Y7 runs on EMUI 8.2 based on Android 8.1 Oreo – not the latest version, but it is all right.
It is also powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 Octacore chipset with 4 GB RAM plus 64 GB ROM and allows up to 512 GB extended storage, where you can keep all your captured moments intact and lets you download more applications.
It does have lags and stutters, especially when you run several apps simultaneously in the background. But if you will just navigate through it, one to three apps at a time, it works well.
HUAWEI APP GALLERY
Unlike the brand’s other recent smartphone releases, the HUAWEI Y7 still comes with Google Mobile Services and Huawei’s AppGallery, too.
The AppGallery is Huawei’s official application distribution platform – the third biggest app store globally.
