In Service and in Love: Migs and Cheeno Almario

For Atty. Migs Nograles-Almario and Cong. Cheeno Almario, love didn’t begin with grand gestures or dramatic declarations. It began with friendship, long conversations, mutual respect, and a shared understanding that both were meant to serve something greater than themselves.

“We were friends to begin with,” Atty. Migs recalls with a smile. “It was more on the conversations that we had.”

What started as connection through words soon became a love defined by depth, patience, and quiet strength. Between two people who live much of their lives in the public eye, their relationship thrives on something refreshingly simple: consistency. “He always finds time to remind me that he’s there,” Atty. Migs shares. “He’ll randomly call and say, ‘Hi, I just wanted to say I love you. Bye!’”

In a world where their schedules are filled with legislative work, public engagements, and commitments to their constituents, they’ve learned that love, too, is an act of service. “You have to be okay with the fact that you’ll share him with his constituents,” Atty. Migs admits. “But of course, you have those more intimate moments.”

For Cong. Cheeno, balance comes with intention. “Date night is ‘no phones night,’” he says, a simple rule that keeps their connection grounded amid the busyness.

Partners in Service and in Spirit

What makes the Almaríos remarkable is how seamlessly they intertwine love and leadership. While Cong. Cheeno serves in Congress, public service is a calling they both deeply share, and neither sees power as the end goal.

“We aim to serve as many people as we can, but even helping one person can multiply and touch many lives,” Cong. Cheeno says. “The world needs more help than hate.”

Atty. Migs echoes this with quiet conviction. “I always just want to be a ripple of change — to be able to help people, regardless of title.”

Their shared mission goes beyond position or policy. Together, they dream not only of a better nation, but of better people.

“When people are really educated about who they pick as leaders, I think it starts there,” Atty. Migs reflects. “Even just good manners and right conduct create a well-rounded Filipino.”

Faith, Forgiveness, and Finding Home

In private moments, away from the political arena, their marriage is built on empathy and faith. They’ve learned to pause mid-disagreement, to ask each other: “Do we talk about this now, or later?”

“It’s inevitable that you’ll fight,” Atty. Migs admits, “but what works for us is catching each other at the height of emotion and asking, ‘What is this really about?’”

They are each other’s reminder of grace. “Sometimes I self-doubt,” Atty. Migs says softly. “He’s the one to remind me that I’ve already come so far. ‘When you can’t believe in yourself,’ he’ll say, ‘I’ll be the one believing for you.”

For someone who once gave up on love, Atty. Migs now smiles knowing that she found not just a partner, but a purpose-driven companion. “He’s my answered prayer,” she says. “He made me realize that love exists.”

And for Cong. Cheeno, the feeling is mutual, quiet but steadfast. “God completed me by bringing her into my life,” he says. “She’s my peace, my partner, and my forever.”
