The Spark of Adventure

For Justine, travel has always been more than a pastime. It’s a way of life. Her early explorations with her family, particularly her father, laid the foundation for her love of discovering new places.

“I think I got it from my dad — this love for exploration,” she reflects. “Whenever we traveled, we would just walk around. It’s something we couldn’t do freely in Manila, and I loved discovering places beyond the usual five-kilometer radius of home.”

Even as a child, she relished these “mental health walks,” a term she’s come to embrace as an adult. “Walking gives you the main character energy,” she says with a laugh. “You observe, you slow down, you see the locals, and sometimes you wonder, ‘Should I live here?’ It’s a beautiful way to connect with the world.”

 

 

Chinoy Roots and Entrepreneurial Drive

As a Chinoy, Justine attributes much of her business acumen to her heritage. Her grandparents, who emigrated from China to the Philippines, exemplified resilience and resourcefulness. “They didn’t know the language or the culture, but they started from scratch,” she shares. “It’s part of our culture to be business-minded. It’s in our blood.”

This drive is evident in her role at Primer Group, where she helps shape the future of World Traveller, a brand rooted in her family’s entrepreneurial legacy. “It’s my way of preserving what my dad and uncles built while also creating something better for the next generation,” she says.

 

 

Leading in a Time of Crisis

When the pandemic struck, the travel industry faced unprecedented challenges. As the head of a travel-focused brand, Justine admits it was a daunting time. “Selling luggage during a pandemic? That was hard,” she recalls. “I would be happy if even one person visited our website. Even if it was just me!”

But through teamwork, perseverance, and her belief that challenges bring opportunities, Justine helped navigate the brand through the crisis. “You take it day by day. You lean on your team, your family, and the community. And eventually, things work out.”

 

Building World Traveller as a Brand

For Justine, World Traveller isn’t just about selling bags or luggage. It’s about inspiring a sense of adventure. “I want it to be more than a product. I want it to remind people of fond travel memories, of family vacations, of exploring new places,” she says.

Under her stewardship, the brand has grown across Southeast Asia, with expansions into Indonesia and Thailand. But her aspirations are even bigger: “The possibilities are infinite. I want World Traveller to grow way beyond what it is today and to be something people are proud of for generations to come.”

 

 

Leadership with Empathy and Vision

Justine’s leadership style is marked by empathy and a commitment to continuous improvement. “Empathy plays a big role,” she explains. “You have to understand where people are coming from. But you also need to be firm when necessary and admit when you’re wrong.”

Her decision-making process is grounded in a simple yet powerful principle: “Things should make sense. If they don’t, ask questions — not to challenge, but to learn and grow.”

 

 

 

A Legacy of Sustainability

Sustainability is more than a buzzword for Justine. It’s a cornerstone of her work. From donating outdoor gear to local guides in the Philippines to organizing ocean cleanups, her team at Primer Group is committed to giving back.

“It doesn’t make sense to take and take. You have to give back,” she says. “Sustainability isn’t just about profit. It’s about building something that lasts and benefits the community.”

 

 

Advice to Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For those dreaming of building their own legacy, Justine offers this wisdom: “Learn from everything — the good and the bad. It’s not all luck. It’s about teamwork, hard work, and finding purpose in what you do.”

She adds, “You deserve to be where you are. That’s why you’re there. So make the most of it.”

As she envisions the future, Justine is focused on growth, both for World Traveller and herself. “I want to see the brand in more countries, offering more products and services,” she says. “Personally, I hope to travel more, not just for work but for leisure, and to leave a mark — whether in the company, the community, or the world.”
