Throughout the pandemic, I’ve proven this to be true – “without music, life would be a mistake” (Nietzsche). And throughout my life, I’ve proven this to be true – anything that is not true is a mistake. This is why an honest mistake can easily be forgiven, because it has an adherence to the truth. But a love without truth is a mistake. An appreciation out of a lying mouth is a mistake. The thing is, mistakes taste sweet until the coating is gone and all that’s left is the aftertaste of it.
Being on lockdown for quite a few months, many of us have pondered on our past mistakes. And perhaps, a few people are still deliberately making mistakes. Maybe, just maybe, we are all carrying the aftertaste of some of our choices and being confined in our homes heightens our power to reminisce them.
These might be the reason why Little Mix was able to hit the music charts again in the Philippines. They just made a grand entrance with their new single, Sweet Melody. The band emerged triumphant on the first day of release, as it trended at No. 1 on Twitter Philippines, and debuted on top of the iTunes Philippines’ Songs chart during the same timeframe.
Co-written by Tayla Parx, and co-produced by No.1 hitmaker MNEK, Sweet Melody is a pulsating pop song emblazoned with gigantic harmonies and a driving rhythm. Its edgy and highly choreographed music video is also making waves on YouTube Philippines as it climbed to No. 10 on its trending list with more than 7 million views on its third tracking day.

This new single paves the way for the girl band to finally release their highly anticipated sixth album this November, Confetti. Jade, Perrie, Leigh-Anne and Jesy have been working on the album since last year. The band joined forces with pop creators and pop supremos like TMS, and long-time collaborator Kamille in the creation of the album. It is a collection of thirteen solid gold pop songs that showcase their phenomenal talent for creating music with messages that appeal to their wide range of audience and fans.
Fans of Little Mix speculates that Sweet Melody is about Perrie’s ex, Zayn Malik. With the lyrics: “He was in a band, full of songs about me,” fans can’t help but link the words to the singer’s reality. Whether or not this speculation is true, the song clearly speaks of a particular mistake: choosing to stay with someone despite all the apparent reasons to leave them behind.
And this is why life would be a mistake without music – it amplifies the truth of our realities and helps us relate to other people’s experiences. It gives us a taste of truth and we can’t miss that. Just like some of our mistakes. Some are not to be missed, especially the honest ones. The truth about mistakes is that they lead us to melodies that eventually help us make better choices.
