Time to get HOOQ’d on local films

June 26, 2019 – Vinz Lamorena

Thanks to the internet, there’s a vast archive of content we have at our fingertips. Most content these days don’t need a paywall to be accessed, but that isn’t really the case when it comes to quality films and shows worth spending our precious free time on.

While streaming subscriptions aren’t a new concept for most digital natives, we still believe that the best things in life are free. Enter HOOQ’s FREEPLAY Festival. The quarterly streaming event allows HOOQ users to gain free access to more than a thousand films for a whole month.

Every version of the festival is said to feature a different lineup of films. For their first run, the video-on-demand platform decided to focus on locally produced content. In fact, a thousand Filipino movies can be streamed for free until July 20, and you don’t even have to register on HOOQ to stream them.

“We are giving Filipinos the freedom to view over 1,000 titles for free! There will be no sign-ups, no registration for a trial or paid subscription needed. Based on our data and insights, and our deep connection to the local audience, we know that video entertainment delight is all about instant enjoyment, consumption that’s mobile, and the power of bite-size and binge-worthy content with local relevance,” HOOQ chief content officer Jennifer Batty said.

Viewers can watch buzz-worthy films like “Die Beautiful,” “Baler,” “Meet Me in St. Gallen,” “Kita Kita,” and “Sid & Aya” over and over. Headlining the streaming festival is Irene Villamor’s “Ulan,” starring Carlo Aquino and Nadine Lustre, which premiered earlier this year. The romantic film laced with magical realism is also available for Indonesia and Singapore viewers. HOOQ also has short special features of fun interviews with Ulan’s cast members.

“I’m just excited because I can watch the movie again. This project is very memorable to me—everything is just amazing, the whole experience of it,” Lustre shared. Past works of the Gawad Urian best actress including “This Time” and “Never Not Love You” are part of the HOOQ VIP catalogue, along with various Hollywood and Southeast Asian titles.

While the festival ends next month, HOOQ’s new “freenium” user experience is here to stay with selected content for free streaming.
