Endless scrolling, countless stories.
Memes, articles, videos - these are all stories that primarily exist because people want to share information, ideas, entertainment and more. Thus, making social media, a quarry of stories and a very powerful tool.
With the influx of posts everyday, social media has been pretty much everyone's go to "place" (especially for Filipinos) - from looking for good recipes to recreate, latest gossips, class cancellation announcements, water interruptions and even shopping!
However, one may wonder, what will happen if these stories are false and misleading?
Mining for the truth is definitely like sifting for a gold nugget in the sand. It is somewhere there, but it is difficult to find. Maria Ressa, Rappler’s CEO and Social Media Week Manila’s 2018 key speaker, quotes a piece of Joseph Goebbels’ wisdom.
"When a lie is said 10 times, Truth has a chance to catch up…but when it’s repeated a million times, it becomes the Truth – especially when it’s backed by online state-sponsored hate exploiting the fracture lines of society."
Admittedly, disinformation and propaganda has become rampant on social media.
This year, Social Media Week Manila is back! Celebrating its 2nd year, SMW Manila 2019 will be held at Estancia, Capital Commons on November 11 and at Samsung Hall, SM Aura Premier on November 12.
With the local theme, "Kwento Mo: Stories that Shape Us", this year's Social Media Week Manila will talk about social media as an influential tool that gives anyone the power to create and share stories online.
Being named as the Social Media Capital of the World, millions of the Philippines' population spend an average of almost four hours a day on social media - sharing posts on Facebook, scrolling through their feeds, twitter updates and more, making this year's theme, undeniably relevant, interesting and timely.
Social Media Week Manila offers stimulating discussions, interviews, and activities, all touching on how to maximize social media. More than 20 speakers from different industries will share their thoughts and insights about reshaping Filipino's online identity into someone who is part of a better digital space where responsible stories that spark meaningful conversations are welcomed.
